Pennsylvania is one of four states that have shores on Lake Erie. Of the eight states that have shores on the Great Lakes, Pennsylvania's shore is the shortest.
Erie is also the name of a city (population 110,786 in 2010) in Pennsylvania, which is on the shore of the lake. Both the lake and the city are named after a tribe of Native American people who lived in the area at the time of the first European contact.
